David Toms' Putter Earns Mucho Dinero

After an enriching second-place finish at the Players Championship last week, David Toms took his remarkable resurgence to the next level today by winning the Colonial Invitational.

David Toms’ putter is the new Never Compromise Dinero Tycoon. Was there ever a more appropriately named putter? After all, it has helped Toms earn a total of more than $2 million in the span of two weeks.

You may have first heard about the Dinero Tycoon putter when we were raving about it last month on The Greenside radio show.

The Never Compromise Dinero Limited putters are forged and milled from 303 stainless steel. Click here for our earlier preview of the Dinero line.

Titleist Acquired by Fila Korea

Acushnet Company and Titlelist, the renowned golf brand and imprint of the wildly popular Scotty Cameron putters, has been acquired by Fila Korea and a private equity firm, according to a news release distributed this morning.

The price tag was $1.225 billion...in cash. Reports say that Fortune Brands, Acushnet's parent company, expects to see net proceeds of $1.1 billion after taxes and expenses (how'd they pull that off?).

Titleist and FootJoy are among the Acushnet brands that are included in the sale. The company line is: "Together, with our new owners, our team is looking forward to strengthening and building upon the global success of the Titleist and FootJoy brands."

We shall see. There is some skepticism here that the changes will only be those of strength and progress. History teaches us that when mega companies are acquired by other mega companies, and the further brands get from their original roots, the more likely you are to see unfortunate developments in the overall integrity or quality of the products.

That said, it's early right now, so Fila Korea should probably get the benefit of the doubt. We hope that they make Titleist proud.

Putter Scores Hole-in-One

Life is just different in Florida. The sunshine and citrus. The alligators. The guy hitting a hole-in-one with his putter...

Yes, you heard right. We'll let the man behind the amazing ace explain:

“We were playing in a Winifred Men’s Club outing,” Bill Whitney told the Villages Daily Sun. “We had one hole where you had to play the entire hole with your driver, one hole where you had to putt with a baseball bat and another hole where you had to putt with croquet mallet."

What, no shuffleboard cue? Anyhow, you can see where this is headed.

On a 75-yard par 3 at The Villages Golf Course, Whitney teed off with his flatstick.

He said, "It stayed in the air for about 25 or 30 yards and then started rolling. I was just hoping that it was going to get close to the green. But it kept rolling, rolling and rolling. And it eventually rolled all the way into the hole. We could watch it all the way. It barely got there. It didn’t even hit the flagstick. It rolled up to the front edge of the hole and fell in."

Simply put, Mr. Whitney is a beast. A 75-yard one-putt? Bravo. Well played.

David Toms' Putter: Dinero Tycoon

Never Compromise Dinero Tycoon Putter
David Toms sank a clutch 18-foot putt on the final hole at the Players Championship before ultimately succumbing to K.J. Choi for a second-place finish.

David Toms’ putter is the new Never Compromise Dinero Tycoon blade, which was released to the retail market this month.

The Tycoon is a classically styled snub-nosed blade with a swan-neck hosel.

Meanwhile, K.J. Choi’s putter is an Odyssey TriHot #2 with an oversized SuperStroke grip, which was detailed in an earlier PutterZone.com story.

You first heard about the new Dinero Limited putters when we recently previewed them in advance of their public release (and on the Greenside radio show). The Dinero line is a fitting successor to the Gambler Limited putters that boldly ushered in a new era for Never Compromise.

In our opinion, the Dinero Tycoon is one of the coolest-looking sticks on the market. And it already lives up to its name, earning Toms enough dinero (a cool $1 million) to live like a proverbial tycoon.

The Fringe: Fairway & Greene Tech Collection Review

Cutting-edge technology is everywhere in golf. It’s in our clubs, balls, shoes and even our shirts. Do you want to look and feel cool on a hot day? Hey, there’s a technology for that!

The challenge with a lot of today’s high-performance attire, however, is that it requires you to look like a performer. You know, the severe athletic cuts, short-short sleeves and ultra-trim shoulders…

Which is all fine and dandy if you have the physique of Camilo Villegas or Tiger Woods (or Natalie Gulbis). But what about the rest of us? You know, 99 percent of the population?

Enter the Tech Collection by Fairway & Greene, which aims to deliver the technological goods without video-game aesthetics.

Under The Hood

“Inspired by the elegance and sophistication of the classic clothing worn by the well dressed players of earlier times. Fairway & Greene has recovered the pure finish fabrics of that time and tailored each to the exacting demands of your swing…The ultimate warm weather shirt. Our proprietary fabrics and knitting process produces an ultra-fine 100% Luxury Polyester shirt that is at the cutting edge of moisture management, hi-speed wicking, anti-microbial technology, UV protection, odor control, and most importantly ease of care. Fairway & Greene Tech features a trimmer silhouette in an expanded range of solids and classic stripes to complement the seasonal color palettes.”

-Solid performance polo with moisture wicking performance is 100% polyester pique
-Fabric has a soft, silky feel
-Lightweight fabric dries quickly for added comfort
-Anti-microbial odor control
-UV sun protection
-Multi-directional stretch fabric allows golfers full freedom to swing
-Fine gauge ribbed collar with a fully taped neck seam
-Short open hem sleeves
-Longer back hem with vented sides
-$69 to $85

Why It Rocks

The Tech Collection shirts are sharply cut without cutting things too sharply, if you get our drift. They aren’t overly roomy, but neither are they going to make you look like, well, Phil Mickelson wearing a “smedium.”

These shirts achieve a stylistic balance as well. On a younger golfer, they look classic. On an older golfer, they look dignified. There are no desperate attempts to appear too youthful—but the styling is nevertheless timeless and therefore sufficiently hip.

Oh yeah, and they feel great, too. This isn’t your grandfather’s polyester. It’s smooth and silky, and it feels like a cool breeze on a warm summer day.

The Final Word
The Tech Collection shirts split the proverbial fairway, combining advanced performance with mature, classic style.

Preview: Odyssey ProType PT 10 Putter

A few new looks from Odyssey have been spotted at tour stops this spring—the ProType PT 10 putter, which was used by Ernie Els to win the South African Open, and the White Ice D.A.R.T. Tour Black putter. And rumor has it that both putters will be made available to retail customers in the coming months.

The Protype PT 10 is the limited-edition ProType follow-up to the Odyssey PT 82 putter. In October of 2010, Odyssey released 2,000 PT 82 putters based on a model Phil Mickelson has used. It’s not yet known how many PT 10 putters will be available. The PT 10 putter is a heel-toe weighted blade with a crank-neck hosel and a black PVD finish. It is milled from soft 1025 carbon steel. How much will it cost? No word yet, but the PT 82 went for $349, so we would expect the PT 10 to be in that same range.

The White Ice D.A.R.T Tour Black putter is a limited-release riff on the original White Ice D.A.R.T. mallet. It features a black finish with white contrasting alignment features for a sleek, clean look. Based on other D.A.R.T pricing, look for that to be in the $179 range.

Method Putter on A Roll

After being in the winner's bag at the recent 2011 Masters, the Nike Method putter took another victory lap in the hands of Lucas Glover at the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday.

Lucas Glover's putter is the Nike Method 003, the same putter that has famously worked its way into the bag of Tiger Woods.

In notching his first win since the 2009 U.S. Open, Glover ranked first in putts per greens in regulation and third in putts per round during the week.

At Augusta National last month, Charl Schwartzel's wielded a Nike Method 004 prototype putter to earn the green jacket. The Method putter has now been used to win three major tournaments.

SeeMore Si4 Putter Review

The SeeMore Si4 is the fourth and latest model in SeeMore's Si Series, which offers the company's signature RifleScope Alignment Technology (RST) at a more approachable price compared to the all-milled SeeMore mSeries putters.

With the traditional RST system, you visually align the shaft at setup so that it hides a red dot along the crown of the putter. In that position, the shaft is framed by two white lines, communicating proper alignment.

The Si4 is the first in the Si Series to offer SeeMore's modified RST2 system, which brings the same visual effect to a classic offset hosel blade. With RST2, the red dot and white lines are located on the underside of the hosel joint, as seen in the accompanying photo and video.

So how does the SeeMore Si4 ultimately stack up? Tune into the following video review by PutterZone.com, in conjunction with our friends at GolflandWarehouse.com.
