Stuart Appleby’s Putter: Odyssey White Hot 330

Posted on August 2, 2010 by PutterZone.com in News, Odyssey Putters - 10 Comments

Stuart Appleby stormed the field on Sunday, shooting a rare score of 59 to seize the Greenbrier Classic. His prize? $1.08 million. The retail cost of his putter? Just $99.

Indeed, Appleby rode a Odyssey White Hot XG 330 putter to victory. This putter can be found at countless online sporting goods stores for a Benjamin plus tax, despite the fact that it is no longer part of Odyssey’s current White Hot XG offerings.

The White Hot XG 330 putter is a face-balanced mallet with a plumber’s neck hosel with full-shaft offset. It incorporates “Hi-Def” alignment stripes along the flange. A multi-layer insert with a “textured impact zone” is designed to clearly define the sweet spot. Appleby’s putter appears to have a custom double-bend neck instead of the stock hosel (as first noted in the comments section below).

Interestingly, if Appleby had gone with the stock hosel, it would have been the second time in three weeks that a face-balanced putter with a plumber’s or “crank neck” hosel had won a tournament. Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open with a custom Redwood Series PING Anser putter with a custom elongated hosel that makes the putter face balanced.

I was pretty sure it was a Rossie he was using. If it was a 330, it didn't have the plumber's neck. I think he also used a White Hot Tour 2 for one of the rounds. It sounds to me like he's been cycling through putters a lot trying to find one that works.

Here's a pic from the Reno-Tahoe Open of what I think he was using. It almost looks like a Yes Donna: http://d.yimg.com/a/p/sp/getty/7c/fullj.f07d06aa9d6f61609e5f60e132e423e7/f07d06aa9d6f61609e5f60e132e423e7-getty-montreux_golf_and_country_club.jpg

You are right, my mistake, his Odyssey has a custom neck. I will correct the story. It was definitely an Odyssey. Reports from the tournament say that it was the 330, which is similar to the Rossie. He has used Yes! in the past.

Are we moving away from 'milled' putters on tour?

Have you guys ever looked into the 'types' of putters used by all the guys on the tour use at each event? It'd be interesting to see how many guys go with the milled putters, versus these odyssey types.

My guess is no, but you're right, it would be cool to have measurable stats on that! Odyssey insert putters have long had a strong presence on Tour. But when I was at the U.S. Open practice green a few months ago, I saw a ton of milled all-metal putters. And then there's the a putter like the Nike Method, milled but with polymer grooves.

Based on my rough information, inserts lead non-inserts by 1… 18 to 17. That's me grouping the TaylorMade face into the insert category even though it's kind of a hybrid.
